Training Camp News & Notes
Two Players Out For The Opener: Redskins wide receiver Malcolm Kelly and offensive tackle Jammal Brown will not play in the preseason opener versus the Buffalo Bills on Friday. Kelly has missed all of training camp due to a hamstring injury he suffered three weeks ago in Arizona while working out with Donovan Mcnabb. Brown suffered a hip injury and he hasn't practiced since last week.
Haynesworth: Albert Haynesworth did finally past the conditioning test on Saturday, and was able to practice with the team. Unfortunately, Haynesworth mostly practiced with the second team instead of the first team. Currently, there is no report whether Haynesworth will be in the starting lineup on Friday or even play a series or two.
Depth Chart: The Redskins release their first depth chart of training camp which includes 11 new players on offense and five new players on defense. Among the new starters are Joey Galloway, Adam Carriker, Maake Kemoeatu, and Kedric Golston. Haynesworth, Kelly, and Thomas, who were starters in 2009, are listed as backups.

Three Reasons Not To Get Vincent Jackson: UPDATED

Its very easy for the Redskins to do whatever they can to acquire wide receiver Vincent Jackson from the San Diego Chargers. Jackson is a Pro Bowl receiver. During his past two seasons, he has surpassed over the 1,000 yards receiving mark. At 6-feet 5-inches and 230 pounds, Jackson is a big play threat than can help the Redskins offense.
The Redskins themselves need help at wide receiver and Jackson could help solidify the issue. Santana Moss is still their number one receiver, but Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas are struggling to show any consistency on the field.
So basically, in a perfect world, its makes sense for the Redskins to trade their 1st, or 2nd round draft pick to the Chargers for Vincent Jackson??
Actually, this trade doesn't make sense for three good reasons.
1)The Off The Field Issues: Jackson brings in his own personal baggage to a roster filled with older veterans. He pleaded guilty to his second DUI conviction last February. This could mean a four game suspension for Jackson to start his 2010 season. Already dealing with Albert Haynesworth's absence on mandatory mini-camp, can the Redskins afford another player with personal issues?
2) The Cost: San Diego is trying to get a first, or two second round draft picks in return, and Jackson wants a bigger contract then Brandon Marshall's deal with the Miami Dolphins. Therefore, the price level is too high to get Jackson.
3) Not Enough Picks: The Redskins cannot afford to get Jackson anyway. The Redskins already traded their 3rd and 4th round picks in 2011 to get Donovan Mcnabb and Jammal Brown. Given the age of this team, the Redskins has to keep their 1st and 2nd round picks because they are going to need them to fill any holes for next year.
So, that is the three reasons why the Redskins should not acquire Jackson. His personal issues, the high cost, and the lack of draft picks prevents this deal from happening. Hopefully, the Redskins can move on and focus on getting rid of Albert Hanyesworth before training camp.
UPDATE: Jackson is suspended for the first 3 games of the season

Jammal Brown Could Be Huge For The Redskins
NOTE: This trade is tied into the Donovan Mcnabb deal. When I first heard about the Redskins trading their 3rd or 4th round draft pick in 2011 to New Orleans for tackle Jammal Brown , I said to myself, here we go again. The Redskins giving away draft picks for older washed up players.
However, this trade has no reminisces of the T.J Duckett deal and the Jason Taylor trade a few years ago. Brown is a legit offensive tackle in the league and Coach Mike Shanahan and General Manager Bruce Allen might have added their second biggest offseason acquisition this year.
At age 29 and 6-foot-6 313 pounds, Brown played at right tackle in his rookie season, and then started at left tackle for the reminder of his six year career. He has started 58 games for the Saints in five seasons before his hip injury sidelined him last year. Brown also made the Pro Bowl in 2006 and in 2008 with the Saints.
If Brown stays healthy this year, the Redskins could have the most improved offensive line in the NFC. Brown is going to be a starter whether he's a left or right tackle. Here is the projected starting lineup for the offensive line with the addition of Jammal Brown.
LT: Jammal Brown
LG: Derrick Dockery
G: Casey Rabach
RG: Artis Hicks
RT: Trent Williams
So far, the starting unit is 10 times better then last season. Trent Williams will most likely start at right tackle, which means Brown will add a veteran presence at left tackle and protect quarterback Donovan Mcnabb's blindside. This trade also moves Artis Hicks to the right guard position and he is thrilled to have Brown in the roster.
Even if one of these starters get injured, look for tackle Stephon Heyer, and guard Mike Williams to fill the void. Shanahan could also add even more offensive linemen during training camp. Either way, the Redskins finally have some depth at the offensive line and it could make a major difference whether they win between 6-10 games in a wide open NFC East.
Therefore, this isn't a typical Shanahan or Dan Snyder type of trade. Its a good trade, and probably a steal for the Redskins given Brown age and versatility. Do you Vinny Cerrato would make this deal if he was the general manager?
